Why?

After spending the morning at the New Zealand High Commission and speaking to one of the staff members there I began to gain a better understanding of why India is the way it is.

He explained that, in order to gain a highly skilled job after university the students must be scoring around 99% in their exams. This means that the remaining students who are not scoring this highly in their exams have little job opportunities available and because jobs that involve a trade are not highly valued people have no choice but to take jobs with little skill required. As a result of this many people don't look at taking up a tertiary education because it is just a waste of time and it has no benefit to them.

This conversation has helped me to comprehend why their are so many people driving rickshaws or running little food or clothing stores on the side of the streets.
