ASHA

We arrived in Delhi last night after what was a horrible 24 hours of authentic Indian travel to see some lovely accommodation awaiting us (at around $4 per night). After walking over the puddles of urine and dodging the fighting dogs on our approach to the hotel we managed a decent enough sleep and headed to the NZ High Commission this morning. It was awesome to finally be back in NZ again and I certainly appreciated the clean bathroom and meringues. Hearing about the High Commissioner's life all over the world was pretty inspiring and showed the effect one person can have on a global scale.

It was also really cool to visit ASHA today and to hear about how it has changed the lives of so many people living in the slums of Delhi. Its hard not to draw comparisons to our lives in New Zealand and feel embarrassed about the fact that kids of around 10 years old are responsible for the immunisations of children in their community or looking after the elderly, all whilst getting an education. Back in NZ we are "babied" through our childhood and teenage years, where our biggest responsibility is basically to make sure not to lose our iPhones or to clean our room.
