As we sat in the Howrah train station there was a certain sadness about leaving a place that has become home over the last week or so. We have made friends, become "locals" at regular eateries, and seen some things that no doubt will have a profound impact on our lives. But there was also a sense of excitement at moving on to a new city with a massive contrast to what we experienced in Kolkata. However, as we got off the train we were reminded that we are definitely still in India. The lights were out at the train station, which was apparently very exciting for the locals, and we were met with much whooping and hollering. A rather disconcerting experience in the early 6am morning mist. In the mad panic to get off the train, I couldn't find my shoes, and as the train was about to move I gave them up for lost and got off the train. When I was on the platform as I got my jumper out of my bag I noticed my shoes in my bag. It seems that the previous night I had been organised and tidy and put them straight into my bag. However as this is not my normal behaviour (as the photo of my bed with the dog on it below shows) I had forgotten. And don't worry Mother, Mr Jordan gave me my dues.
Although we will miss Kolkata I am sure, I will not deny it is nice to be here in Hotel Surya. With proper beds, a beautiful restaurant and hot showers, we are enjoying some lovely down time to catch up on some sleep, and give our ears a break from the endless horns. Jonty |
