Today Jonty and I experienced something quite bizarre on one of our many rickshaw rides throughout the city. We were stopped at the lights when the rickshaw in front of us ran out of fuel. Both drivers started running around madly as we were at the front of a ton of traffic.
Finally our driver got in our rickshaw and hung his right leg out the side, he then accelerated slowly and smoothly whilst putting his leg on the rickshaw in the broken down vehicle in front of us. This obviously assisting in creating some momentum. Slowly the broken down rickshaw gained speed, with our driver keeping our vehicle halfway across both lanes as he kept aiding the other rickshaw. This continued for about 6 or 7 minutes at speeds well over 60 or 70kmhs and he managed to keep his leg on the rickshaw the whole time. Had the rickshaw in front had to break to dodge something (which they often do) his leg would of been crushed. I don't quite understand how his leg was that strong but according to Ali, our driver, this sort of thing happens all the time. I guess that's just India for you.
