My Learning

To have had a hot shower and buffet for breakfast, with a swimming pool and massages waiting in line, Hotel Surya in Varanasi is almost too good to be true! What a huge contrast between the two cities. I feel that where we are staying is quite removed from what Kolkata has shown me about India, though I guess the 6 or so days we spent there was only one part of our journey.

Now that we've had some time to relax, the experiences in Kolkata really begin to become more vivid. I think that only after living in this luxurious hotel do we see the reality the events in Kolkata, some that almost became routine. 3 things that I'm thinking right now are 1. Life in Kolkata is truly special. 2. The people make the city what it is. 3. I will probably never experience the same thing ever again.

Although it is a good-bye to the people and places we've met, the relationships and bonds we've formed will forever be with us. One thing that Kolkata has taught me is to be more open-minded - really, that is the only way to stay sane in such a crazy city, with horns blaring every second of every minute of everyday, and the sensory explosion you get after walking by the brick wall at the end of Kyd St (you don't want to know). Just accept it. I feel that by accepting it for what it is, you get a better understanding of the world that leads to more insightful perception. I find I am more in tune with this idea - I have always been a more 'listening' type of person.

Nice to hear from you Mum and Dad, can't wait to share all my stories with you!

Ivan
