Dear Group,
It is slightly odd to think that you have already reached phase two of your sojourn. And, it appears that stage two will be markedly different from stage one. The comments regarding Kolkata may have ceased but the impressions and learnings will endure. As a blog reader, it seems that one of the enduring impressions of Kolkata is that it is a city of dramatic contrast.
I wonder if, as humans, we can only truly perceive (and possibly value) the existence of one state of being as it occurs in relation to another state. Maybe everything needs to be relational. Maybe we need to be presented with contrast to truly perceive each state of existence.
We perceive the light of day only after the darkness of night and appreciate the smoothness of a rose petal only after being scratched by the prickles
To then find value in the contrast is yet another step forward. I often think about the beauty of lakes such as Taupo and I am forced to acknowledge that its beauty is only possible because of a massive destructive volcano.
Contrast and paradox certainly seem to have been evident for you all in Kolkata. I know you have all learnt a great deal from your time there and hope it will be the same in Varanasi.
Kind regards,
Liz
